10 Benefits of Carrots: The Crunchy Powerfood

1. Improved Vision Western culture’s understanding of carrots being “good for the eyes” is one of the few we got right. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, which is converted into vitamin A in the liver. Vitamin A is transformed in the retina, to rhodopsin, a purple pigment necessary for night vision.

Healthy Skin Diet: Why Juicing Is the Key to Young, Vibrant Skin

ACE inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers

There are systems in your body that work together to keep your blood pressure at a level high enough to get enough oxygen and nutrients around your body. ACE inhibitors and ARBs lower your blood pressure by acting on one of these systems; the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system..

Trichology - The Unknown Profession

The IAT administers the certification course developed by the University of Southern California. The IAT was established in 1974 and is a non-profit organisation promoting the study, research and practice of hair and scalp health and disease. The International Association of Trichology also establishes standards, certifies students and publishes educational material. Qualified Trichologists will have the initials IAT after their name and are bound by a strict code of ethics. They are required to maintain their knowledge by conducting ongoing research, study and to attend conferences.
In addition to completing the course, clinical training must be undertaken under the supervision of an IAT-approved trichologist. Students can presently undertake clinical training in Sydney (Australia),, India, Sao Paulo (Brazil), the U.S.A. and Manchester (U.K.)
A consultation with a Trichologist will begin with an in-depth questionnaire. This will ask questions about your medical history, family history, and nutrition and lifestyle choices. The Trichologist will physically examine your hair and scalp and may take samples. These samples will be examined under a microscope or sent away for a mineral analysis.
The microscopic examination can help to determine:
  1. If the rate of hair loss is excessive.
  2. If there is inflammation and redness around the follicles.
  3. Detect if there is new hair growth.
  4. Examine any structural damage to the hair shaft.
  5. Determine the presence of inherited hair conditions.
  6. If head lice or a fungal infection is present.
Once a cause has been established, a treatment plan will be recommended. It needs to be noted that due to our individuality, results from treatments will differ from patient to patient and a multi therapy approach is the most successful. Treatments need to be strictly adhered to for at least 3-6 months before assessing the success of the treatment. As hair growth is a slow process, photos will be taken to record the changes in your hair and/or scalp as treatment progresses. In some cases you may be referred onto your family doctor or a dermatologist for further treatment and/or blood tests.
Trichologist have a special interest in nutrition and its role in hair and scalp conditions. They also pay a close detail to the endocrine, immune, nervous, and circulatory and digestive systems, as these all play a part in the health of your hair and scalp.
Trichologists work closely with GPs and Dermatologists to help diagnose the cause.
To resolve hair loss, a correct diagnosis is required. Only qualified Trichologists and Dermatologists are able to determine the correct diagnosis and recommend the suitable treatment.

Trichotillomania And The Troubling Effects It Has On Self-Esteem

Living with Trichotillomania plays a major role in the demise of one's self esteem. The cycle of hair pulling brings a surge of determination and spirit to heal, but it is then replaced with anger, shame and embarrassment once the pulling returns. This cycle continues for years and years for those with Trichotillomania, weakening self esteem, self confidence, self love and self acceptance.
That morning, she woke up and looked in the mirror to see a person that she felt could be so pretty, if she only had beautiful, long eyelashes to line her eyelids and eyebrows to define the empty space between her eyes and her forehead. Long locks of hair rest on her shoulders but are overshadowed by the large bald patches on her crown.
The difference in appearance may be accepted by others, but the inner pain and frustration of knowing that she did this to herself the night before, brings tears to her bald eyes. Why would she do this to herself? Why couldn't she fight the urge? What about the soap opera part she had worked so hard to be cast in? Now that she had the part, how could she go to the studio like this? If she wore a wig, she would have to tell the producer and the make up team, and how could she explain why she needed to wear a wig all of a sudden? What if they asked her to take it off? They would see her real hair and all of the baldness around the crown.
After every thing she had worked so hard to secure, she had to find a way to cancel her performance so that she didn't have to explain her situation. Who would understand why she pulls out her own hair? No one would understand it, and if she explained that she had Trichotillomania, they may think she is a risk to cast in any upcoming projects due to the unforeseen future episodes of pulling and resulting baldness.
She places a call to the studio to let them know that her mother has suddenly become ill and she must travel across the country to visit her, therefore, she will not be available to film the part she was cast in. Tears roll down her face as she hangs up the phone. After all of the frustration and anger she feels toward herself, she now has to lie on top of it.
Months pass and her hair has begun to grow in. Her eyelashes are short and stubby, but they are there, and her eyebrows are coming in nicely. Her hair is still very short around her crown, but it is growing in and becoming less and less obvious as each week passes.
Her frustration and anger toward herself have faded, and she is ready again to follow her dreams of being an actress. She is stronger this time and her self esteem is no longer fragile. She is a rock, and nothing can make her pull again.
The auditions begin and she is awarded a film role that will change the direction of her career forever. Filming begins in the fall. After months of being pull free, she has another episode of pulling. Again, her head is bald and there is no time for it to grow back in prior to production commencing. Again, she is faced with the shame and embarrassment of canceling her appearance or facing the questions, judgment and labeling if she explains herself, which is just too much for her to bear. No one would hire her if they knew. Her dreams, once again, would have to be put on hold.
The cycle has repeated itself and continues to repeat itself over and over again. The emotional rollercoaster is running and cannot stop. The sufferer experiences great highs, only to pull again and feel lower than ever. Then it's back to flying high until another episode of pulling emerges.
There is no known medical cure for those who suffer from Trichotillomania. However, there are many people who have become pull free and continue to be pull free today.
What if those who suffer from hair pulling changed their perspective? What if hair pulling and baldness was normal and/or accepted? What if being bald was beautiful? Can you imagine the potential of a person with the spirit and determination of a person with Trichotillomania, who was free of the negative feelings involved with pulling and the resulting baldness? A true, compassionate leader in our universe would emerge and change the lives of many.

How Are Stress and Hair Loss Related

Hair loss takes two forms: shedding hair in excessive amounts, and hair follicles becoming dormant and not growing new hairs. In the case of pattern baldness in men and women, the follicles stop producing hair. There are numerous causes of excessive hair shedding, and both physiological and emotional stress can cause hair loss. Whereas pattern baldness can only be treated with medications, stress related hair loss is usually a reversible condition.
Hair Shedding
At any given time, about 10% to 15% of the hairs on your head are in a resting phase, known as the telogen phase. They are not growing during this phase, but they are not falling out either. The telogen phase typically lasts between two and four months. At the conclusion of the telogen phase, the hair follicle enters the anagen phase, during which time new hair grows. The new hair growing in pushes out the old one, causing what is commonly referred to as shedding. Most people lose an average of 100 hairs from shedding per day with no noticeable thinning. Hair loss becomes noticeable when a larger number of hair follicles than is normal enter the telogen phase or when the telogen phase lasts longer than normal. Stress in various forms can cause either, or both, of these to occur.
Telogen Effluvium
Telogen Effluvium is one of the most common causes of hair loss due to excessive shedding, and numerous stressors can cause this condition. There are several types of TE. The most common type of TE occurs when the body experiences a shock that puts a larger than normal number of hair follicles in the resting phase. When the anagen cycle begins, excessive hair shedding occurs, as much more than the normal 10% to 15% or hairs were resting. TE in a second form can cause the hair follicles to remain in the resting phase for a longer than normal period of time. This means that when the growing cycle resumes, the follicles in normal stages of new growth as well as those that have been resting for a long time will be lost at around the same time.
Both forms of TE can cause noticeable hair loss. Shocks, or stressors, to the body that can cause TE include a serious illness, severe injury, pregnancy, an extremely high fever, an operation, chronic insomnia, or a diet that severely restricts calories. Whereas most of these causes of stress are physiological, emotional stress can play a role as well. For example, emotional stress may result in a person not eating or sleeping well for weeks at a time, which can shock the body.
Alopecia Areata
Alopecia Areata is a condition that causes large amounts of hair to fall out within a short period of time, causing very visible bald spots. Alopecia Areata is believed to be a disorder of the immune system that causes white blood cells to attack and destroy hair cells. The attack usually occurs in patches rather than randomly throughout the hair, which accounts for the bald spots. In some cases, all of the hair on a person's head can be lost, and body hair can be affected as well.
As with TE, a shock to the body is usually the cause of Alopecia Areata. Stressors include a serious illness or injury, or a high fever. While physiological causes are usually responsible for most cases of TE, emotional stress is responsible for many cases of Alopecia Areata. Stress weakens the immune system to a degree that its responses may become faulty, as is the case with Alopecia Areata.

Hair Loss - A Serious Condition

As we age, we notice changes in our bodies and in our health - it's inevitable. One obvious change is in our hair and skin. We are all losing it. It becomes thinner, finer and changes to grey. This is aging. However, hair loss is a completely different demon. Although many experience this condition, the cause of it still remains somewhat of a mystery. Researchers tell us to look at the mother's side of the family, others say it is the father's side. However, there is no sure and fast way to determine if you will experience hair loss early on in your life. Your hair will ultimately change texture and color as you age, that is normal.
Androgenic alopecia, or more known as pattern baldness, is the most common cause in both men and women. In normal pattern baldness, the hair is lost in a well-defined pattern that is very common. It thins at the crown of the head and at both temples. A rim is left around the outside of the scalp (this is often called the donor area in hair restoration surgery). This is much more typical for men - women do not often experience this same kind of pattern. Women typically experience an overall thinning around the entire scalp.
There are several causes of this type of hair loss. Both environmental and genetic factors play a part. Mostly, the exact cause of pattern loss remains a mystery. Much of the research has been done of the genetic factors of androgenic alopecia. For example, some of the genes involved in premature pattern baldness are X-linked. Men whose fathers experienced hair loss were 2.5 times more likely to experience it as well. Many believe that one should look to their mother for the causes of hair loss - but the truth is, it can be from either side of the family, mother or father.
Hair restoration becomes a very good option for those suffering from androgenic alopecia. This is because there is an apparent area of the scalp that is unaffected by pattern baldness. That ring that many have around the scalp serves as great donor for transplant. This is because this it is not affected by DHT, or dihydrotestosterone (this typically is the hormone that kills the growth on the scalp). So the one positive of androgenic alopecia or pattern baldness is that the candidate is ideal for hair transplant due to the strong donor hair.

Experiencing Hair Loss - Look to Diet, Lifestyle

When you first notice you are losing your hair, it is important to discover, for your own piece of mind and for your overall health, the cause and possible treatments. Some hair loss is more severe than others and it's important to know why you are experiencing this. When diagnosing the cause, it's important to look at simple things like your diet and lifestyle choices before looking at more severe things like medical conditions and diseases. Something as simple as not getting enough protein can be affecting your locks.
Your Diet
The saying "you are what you eat" is not far from the truth. The nutrients you are absorbing as well as the nutrients you are lacking all affect your body in some way - and can also have physical effects on your body. If you are not getting enough protein in your diet, for example, this can have an impact of the health of your skin and follicle growth.
Medical Conditions and Diseases
Some medical conditions such as thyroid disease and anemia may be affecting your health. This is why it is so crucial to go to your doctor to determine get a diagnosis. If it is something more serious, catching it early is most likely important if you want to treat the disease or medical condition. It's also important as we age to get our blood checked regularly. You could have low oxygen levels in your blood and not even realize it - this might be the reason for thinning.
Your Pony Tail
Ladies - a tight pony tail is a big no-no for the health of your hair. Another obvious one is hair extensions. If you pull your hair very tightly often enough, this causes breakage and sometimes irreversible damage and hair loss. We think that because our hair is constantly regrowing that it is no fragile, but it quickly becomes fragile when it is pulled on or weighed down on too often.
Treatment options for female hair loss:
  1. Minoxidil - Rogaine for Women is one option to help with hair regrowth. It has been shown to help stop androgenetic alopecia and even possibly regrow hair.

  2. Laser Therapy - Another option for hair loss is a laser comb, such as the HairMax Laser Comb by Lexington. It is the only lasercomb approved by the FDA to help with hair regrowth. The results vary from person to person.

  3. Hair Transplant - When temporary hair loss turns into permanent hair loss, a hair transplant is a more likely option and one of the only that can adverse the effects of permanent hair loss.

I've Had Hair Loss For Months And I'm Starting To Lose Hope - Insights That Might Help

I sometimes hear from people who beginning to feel hopeless because of the hair loss which never seems to end. Often, they have tried several things in the hopes of slowing or stopping the hair loss, but nothing has provided the relief that they were hoping for. And this can lead to a feeling of despair or helplessness.
I heard from someone who said: "when my hair started shedding, I hoped that it was just a seasonal thing that would resolve quickly. I've had this type of hair loss before and although the amount of hair that sheds out is alarming, it's over so quickly that it's not a big deal. Unfortunately, it's now obvious that this isn't a seasonal issue. Once I realized that it wasn't seasonal shedding, I began to hope that I had telogen effluvium because at least that way, the hair loss would end after a few months. Well, now eight months has gone by, and the shedding hasn't stopped. At this point, I have no idea what type of hair loss I have and it doesn't appear to be slowing in any way. I am losing hope. How do I keep going when it appears that there is no hope in sight?" I'll try to address these concerns below.
Why You Shouldn't Lose Hope: I know firsthand that it's very easy to get down when you are going through this. I got so down when I was having aggressive hair loss that I went and got fitted for a topper and a wig because I just wanted to be prepared. Thankfully, I never had to use them. But in my own mind, I fully expected that I would need them one day because I too had lost hope. And I'm not a pessimistic person by nature but when you never see any positive change, it's easy to expect the worst.
But here is what I've learned from my research and from reaching out to other's in the same situation. Plenty of people see their hair loss end. Many see some improvements over time. In my opinion and experience, the only reason to lose hope is the result of giving up completely. As long as you keep educating yourself, you continue to try to improve your situation, and you keep a positive outlook, there is always reason to have hope.
Know That Hair Loss And Shedding Is Often Treatable: Think about it this way. Many types of hair loss can be treated or improved. Even if this person had chronic telogen effluvium, this condition will often eventually resolve once the trigger is removed. Sure, it may take longer than you would like. But even with chronic telogen effluvium, the constant unrelenting shedding typically doesn't last forever. I'm certainly not an expert, but I believe that many specialists would tell you the same.
And even androgenetic alopecia can be treated aggressively by decreasing the sensitivity to androgens and by supporting regrowth. This person's description didn't make me think of alopecia areata, but even that condition can be treated by an experienced dermatologist. And some people go into remission and grow their hair back even when they have lost huge amounts of hair.
I didn't know that type of hair loss was behind this situation, but it help to know that I've known people who have shed for long periods of time who have had recovery even when they thought this wasn't possible and even when they had nearly given up. I can also tell you this. Often, your hair loss doesn't appear to be as bad or as obvious to others as you might think. We often think what we are going through is extremely noticeable, but the truth is most people just aren't paying attention.
I know that in our own minds we worry that we are going to wake up bald (or at least very thin) one day. But this is rarely the case. Often, the hair loss is slower than we think and because we start out with so much hair, noticeable hair loss takes several months (or even years) of steady shedding. I know that this is hard. I know that it can feel like there is no hope because there is no end. But the end could be right around the corner and you may not appreciate this if you have shut down. I won't tell you that it's "just your hair" because I hated it when people told me this. It's not that simple. And it diminishes what you are going through. What I will say though is that you have value and worth far beyond your perceived appearance. You deserve your best effort. And your best effort doesn't include giving up.
So to answer the question posed, there is definitely reason to hold onto hope. Sometimes, an improvement is right around the corner and sometimes it takes trying just one more thing or going to one more specialist until you stumble on a diagnosis or a treatment that might help you. And sometimes, time is all you need as your trigger resolves itself.

Care Tips for Beautiful Hair

One of the first things people notice about others is the hair. You can dictate your look depending on the length and hairstyle. Keeping it clean, neat, and beautiful also indicates good hygiene and overall health. Below are a few tips to keep it looking its best every day:
The natural texture, style, and colour suit you best. Changing your hairstyle is the fastest and easiest way to change your look, but avoid making too many radical changes too often. Skip harmful chemicals that alter it and experiment with different cuts and hairstyles instead.
Try to schedule your treatments several months between each other if you like to alter your hairstyle often. Give your hair time to heal and breathe after the chemical treatments. Blow-drying, curling, or straightening it too frequently will leave it damaged.
When using products like Moroccan oil, make sure you follow the directions for use carefully, especially if it involves time. Products that sit in it for too long could lead to irritation or even scalp damage. Keep in mind that manufacturers research these directions for their clients to get results.
Observe proper hygiene. Regularly shampoo and condition your hair to keep them clean, shiny, and soft. This regular maintenance regimen will help you avoid hair problems like greasy and dandruff. Do not overdo it either, as over washing can lead to loss.
Avoid brushing or combing hair when it is wet. Damp texture may be easier to manage, but wet hair easily breaks. Your choice of comb also affects the health of it. Choose combs with wide and smooth bristles to avoid split ends or scratching your scalp.
Food like salmon, oysters, and spinach are good for the hair. Salmon contains vitamin D that improves its strength. Zinc, found in oysters, is a key nutrient for avoiding loss and flaky scalps. Vitamins found in spinach also help oil circulation that helps make it shiny.
You do not need a counter top full of hair products and appliances for a beautiful hair. If you take time to find the right products and the best brands, you might realize you only need a couple of items to do the trick. Too many different hair products are one way to damage your hair permanently. Try Moroccan oil instead to improve your hair.
Treat any hair problems like head lice immediately. These kinds of hair problems are embarrassing and contagious. You may want to use preventive shampoos if you live in an area where head lice are frequent or you live with a child prone to lice.

How To Prevent Cold-Weather Hair Flyaway

The worst part of winter is the static electricity that makes your mane stand on end. If you suffer from staticky strands every time the temperature takes a dip, you could use some quick tricks to keep those frizzes at bay. Whether you're at home, the office or painting the town red, here are plenty of ways to avoid looking electric-shock chic.
When You're Getting Ready...
The reason your hair stands on end in cold weather is because your locks lack moisture, and static electricity has more opportunity to build up. The best way to prevent flyaways is to nip these problems in the bud. Preventing static starts the second you step into the shower; with the proper prep, you won't have to throw your locks into a ponytail every day.
Use moisturizing hair shampoos and condition hair every day. Leave the conditioner in for a few minutes; to avoid wasting water, wash and condition your hair first and let the moisturizers work their magic while you soap up with shower gel; rinse the product out afterward. Deep conditioning treatments or leave-in conditioner should be used at least once per week as well.
Before you exit the shower, turn the hot water off and let the cold water cascade over your locks for a few seconds - as long as you can stand! - to help flatten the cuticle and prevent static.
Don't even think about brushing out tangles; your hairbrush builds up static. Instead, towel-dry hair and use a wide-tooth comb. Then, apply your hair styling products to prevent damage as you blow-dry. Hairsprays and anti-frizz shine serums help prevent flyaways, and silicon-based hair styling products are best for stopping static.
Last but not least, use an ionic blow dryer, which neutralizes static particles. Use a low heat setting to dry hair, then set your style with a shot of cold air when your entire head is dry.
When You're Out and About...
If you're already away from home when the static strikes, don't despair - there are still options to keep the flyaways away.
Before you leave the house, pop a dryer sheet into your purse for emergencies. When you notice your hair feeling staticky, pull out the sheet and swipe it over your strands; just like dryer sheets keep the static cling out of your clothes, it also works on your mane!
If you notice your coif is more likely to be staticky in your office or home, the problem may simply be that the air is too dry. Pick up a humidifier to put a little moisture back in the air.
