10 Benefits of Carrots: The Crunchy Powerfood

1. Improved Vision Western culture’s understanding of carrots being “good for the eyes” is one of the few we got right. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, which is converted into vitamin A in the liver. Vitamin A is transformed in the retina, to rhodopsin, a purple pigment necessary for night vision.

Healthy Skin Diet: Why Juicing Is the Key to Young, Vibrant Skin

Admit it; as we age, we all take a look in the mirror one morning and think to ourselves, gosh, I wish I would have taken better care of myself. The wrinkles start setting in, the spots and blemishes become more pronounced, the skin dulls, and we look older!.

5 Ways to Ensure a Good Night's Sleep

Sleep is one of the major stepping-stones, or "foundation blocks", when it comes to rebuilding your health from the ground up or building a happy, healthy lifestyle. As most of you know, getting a good nights rest aids in numerous health matters including memory amelioration, recovery time, longevity, mood, and your body's inflammation levels... and that's just the start! However, the health benefits are plentiful and spoken of so often, that this article will focus on sleep in a couple of different ways; the first of which is a little something called biphasic sleep, and if you keep reading, I'll give you a few helpful hints on how to get a better nights rest as well.
I think most of us can agree that recommended eight hours of sleep per night is sufficient for the majority of people, but what I am about to tell you next goes against common beliefs surrounding sleep. Although eight hours is the ideal, it doesn't necessarily need to be the "solid" eight hours that our modern society believes to be crucial. In fact, it may be more appropriate for our body's needs to have what's called "biphasic sleep". Biphasic sleep is defined as two parts/segments of sleep. In fact, historically speaking, biphasic sleep was extremely common, if not the norm. People used to sleep in two four-hour segments, the first of which was called "first sleep" or "deep sleep" and the second, "second sleep" or "morning sleep". The two segments were separated by at least an hour of wakefulness and slight activity including meditating, prayer or reading by candlelight.
Clinicians are currently aiming to have people with sleeping difficulties to change the way they think about sleep. In order to reduce the pressure and anxiety so many people feel when waking in the middle of the night, clinicians have been enforcing the truth: it is absolutely normal to awake in the middle of the night. They are encouraging people to embrace this break in their sleep instead of angrily tossing and turning trying to get back to sleep. I welcome you all to give biphasic sleep a chance, and see for yourself what kind of impact it has on your ability and willingness to rise and shine at the sound of your alarm clock. Whether you try it out or not, everyone needs a little help getting into the first phase of sleep every now and then, so on that note, here are a few tips to get the most out of your nightly Zs.
1. One of the most useful tips I've encountered for a good night's sleep is complete darkness - this means blocking ALL light from your room. This includes turning your cell phone off, computer screen off, turning your alarm clock around and covering the light from under the door. Also, blackout shades are a helpful investment.
2. Leave the computer and TV alone before bed as the light from the screens lessens your ability to produce melatonin. Instead of watching a show or surfing the net before bed, try reading a book - it's relaxing and will tire you out faster, by engaging your brain, than any late night television. Bright lights, whether from the sun or a computer or TV screen is a signal for wakefulness.
3. Take the time to develop a routine for yourself. A ritual, if you will, before bed - something relaxing. It's up to you what that ritual entails, just ensure that it is consistent. This will help your body develop a rhythm. This ritual can include anything from reading to taking a bath to relaxing by candlelight. Go to bed and rise at the same times every day.
4. Using a foam roller or getting a massage before bed can also be quite beneficial. Unfortunately, for most of us, a personal massage every night is out of the question. Thankfully, for us less fortunate folk, a foam roller works just as well! Although a tad uncomfortable in the moment, ten minutes of foam rolling, before bed can release tension (both physical and mental). It will create a more peaceful mind and body and make drifting off into a more satisfying sleep more attainable.
5. This next one may not be for everyone, but meditation - guided or non - can be an excellent way of helping you clear your mind and prepare yourself for rest. There are many podcasts and CDs that can help you with guided meditation if you are not accustomed to it. There are a few that come highly recommended.
These are tips and tricks that I have found useful on my quest for a sound sleep. Although not all of these will appeal to every one of you, it won't hurt to try them out and figure out what works for you. Guard your sleep well.

What Is the Purpose of Sleep?

The physical state of sleep is a naturally recurring process in which the body experiences reduced or absent consciousness, suspended or diminished sensory activity and the complete inactivity of nearly all of the body's voluntary muscles. Scientifically, sleep can be described as a heightened anabolic state that accentuates the growth and rejuvenation of the immune, nervous, skeletal and even the body's muscle systems. The sleep process can be observed in all mammals and birds as well as in some reptiles and fish.
The purpose
Although not fully understood by modern day science, sleep is still the subject of many in-depth scientific studies. These studies have all concluded that sleep is the physical process of conserving energy and allows for the decreases of the body's metabolism by anything between the 5 and 10 percent.
Did you know? Sleep and hibernation is not the same thing. In fact, a hibernating animal still needs to sleep despite the hypo metabolism process that the hibernating animal experiences. During this hibernation process an animal needs to return its body state from a hypothermic state to a euthermic state in order to sleep. This makes sleeping an energetically expensive process for hibernating animals.
Types of sleep
There are two types of sleep in mammals and birds, namely rapid eye movement or REM and non-rapid eye movement or NREM (also called non-REM). Both types of sleep have very distinctive physiological and neurological features attributed to them.
Did you know? The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has further divided NREM into three different sub stages of sleep. These stages are: N1, N2, and N3 sleep, with N3 also being referred to as delta or slow-wave sleep.
The stages:
NREM Sleep Stage 1: This stage of sleep is found between actual sleep and wakefulness. It is commonly known as dozing and the body's muscles are still active.
NREM Sleep Stage 2: The theta activity stage, it is now more difficult to awaken the sleeper.
NREM Sleep Stage 3: This stage is called the slow wave sleep stage. During this stage the sleeper is less responsive to the environmental and outside stimuli no longer produce any reaction.
REM Stage: During this stage of sleep the sleepers eye movement increases and most muscles are paralyzed. This stage is also referred to as the paradoxical stage as the sleeper, although exhibiting EEG waves similar to a waking state, is now much harder to wake than in any other stage.

Ways of Falling Asleep Quickly

Some benefits of sleep include:
1. Your brain converts short-term memory to long-term memory.
2. Tissues regenerate and muscles recover (explaining why sleep is so important to athletes)
3. Metabolism slows and the body rests in preparation for the new day ahead.
Sleep has survived the course of evolution. If our deer hunting, wild berry picking ancestors found the need to sleep, despite enemy tribes looking for their scalps and dangerous bears hungry for a meal, then so should we! Sleep is a huge part of life, taking about 8 hours of a person's time everyday, or roughly a third of a person's time.
Almost all of the most successful people in the world have cracked the code and realized that being well rested gives them more energy to be more productive.
4 Quick Tips to Fall Asleep:
- Cold is an effective signaler for sleep, so opt to take 10 minute ice baths with 2-3 bags of ice from a convenience store an hour before bed.
- Plan an extra 15 minutes before sleep and in the morning for a sleep and wake-up routine. For example, every night before going to bed, drink a glass of water, listen to soothing music, and stretch for 15 minutes. In the morning, drink another glass of water, listen to some hip-hop music, and do some push-ups and sit-ups.
- Reduce your sugar and caffeine intake during the day to prevent drastic rises and falls in your energy level. Opt for fruits and vegetables as snacks instead. If possible, eating meals at set times will regulate bodily hormones responsible for developing a consistent circadian rhythm, including sleep cycles.
- Make a habit of writing journal entries every night to clear your mind of stressful scenarios or anxious thoughts. This will help put you mentally at ease and more prone to sleep peacefully. To avoid late night planning, write out a priorities or to-do list in the afternoon or early evening instead of right before bed time.
If you are desperate for a way to fall asleep quickly, you are not alone. People of all ages, genders, shapes, and sizes have trouble falling asleep for various reasons, be it stress, worry, or a number of other factors. Ironically, sleep deprivation only exacerbates these problems. Learning how to sleep properly will save you HOURS of time and trouble.

Perfect Solutions To Get Rid Of Snoring Issues With Best Anti Snoring Sprays

The main cause of snoring is due to the obstruction of the movement of air through the respiratory structures while breathing when a person sleeps. The vibration of the respiratory structures causes the snoring sound. While in some cases the sound is soft, sometimes it can be loud and quite disturbing. On an average, at least thirty percent of adults snore.
Why does it happen?
Snoring happens when the air intake and outflow while breathing is obstructed. This can sometimes happen even if you have a common cold. But in most cases, the common cause is that while sleeping, the muscles in a person's throat relax too much. This may happen due to a weak throat, fat deposits in the throat, alcohol intake, sleeping on your back, etc. This causes the throat opening to become narrow and it becomes difficult for air to pass through the throat. Since the amount of air in the lungs needs to be maintained at a constant level, the frequency of air intake increases. This is what causes the unpleasant sound. Snoring is an indicator of troubled breathing while sleeping. The narrower the throat opening, the louder the sound will be.
Impact of snoring
This unpleasant irritation prevents not just the particular person from getting proper sleep at night, but also prevents the others around him from having a peaceful sleep. This improper sleep at night causes other complications such as drowsiness during the day, disturbed focus on work and personal schedules, severe headaches, irritability, and low libido. Sometimes it can severely affect one's lifestyle. It can cause significant social and psychological damage to the concerned person who snores. Some studies and researches have linked snoring to increased risk of heart attack and stroke. It also affects the sex life of many couples, leading to marital problems. People under study have reported a major improvement in marital life after snoring was cured using certain methods, one of which is the use of anti snoring sprays.
Treatment
Irregular sleep should not be ignored as it is a serious abnormal condition. You must take all necessary efforts to have it cured as soon as possible. All the treatments aim at clearing the nasal and throat passages so that air can flow freely. Reducing one's weight is recommended as it helps to reduce fat deposits in the throat. There are various products that are available in the market that are used as treatments for snoring. But not all of them have the same degree of effectiveness. Some of them most effective ones are anti snoring sprays. Some companies offer anti snoring remedies in the form of nasal drops. The drops and sprays go straight into the throat and lubricates the throat, and strengthens the muscles there so that they don't become weak.

A Good Night's Sleep

Let's discuss how to get sustainable good sleep. Let me preface this by first saying if you're exhausted and overtired, you should see your medical professional and get help.
However, if you'd like to have that restful sleep that means you wake up feeling happy and raring to go even before your second cup of coffee, here are some thoughts for you:
Breathing is important
Make sure there's air coming into your bedroom - fresh air is vital. Don't close up your room and breathe stale air. Try to get air from non-polluted sources (have open windows on the garden side, rather than the front, facing the street).
Turn off electrical things
Turn off your mobile phone, or if you need it for alarms or such, switch it to flight mode. Your mobile phone sends a signal to the tower every five minutes (ish) and that signal, although you can't hear it, it still affects you. If you absolutely must have it on, try to keep it outside of the room.
Turn off your wifi when you're not using it, too. Those of you old enough to remember the sound of a modem communicating, that's the noise it still makes, you just can't hear it. If you remember what a mobile sounds like when it interferes with the radio, that's the noise your wifi makes. That can affect your muscles, your brain and thus your sleep, even though you can't hear it. Even try turning it off for a couple of weeks and see how you feel.
Moderate exercise
Do some moderate exercise through the day - go for a walk, especially if your job or day is usually sedentary. Humans are meant to move, so we work better all around if we do some exercise every day. That doesn't just apply to sleep - all your organs work better with moderate exercise.
Reduce alcohol, coffee, cigarettes and other toxins
I know, I know... I have my own vices, and I know how much fun they are... and I'm not in any way saying you have to cut these out completely, just cut them down. Try reducing coffee intake after lunch, for example. Have an alcohol free day every week (or week). Cut down your cigarettes by one today. See how you feel, see how your sleep is.
Sleep 'til you wake
I know this one is easier said than done, especially if you have to live to someone else's timetable! However, if you are constantly being woken up way too early, you might have to contemplate going to bed a bit earlier, or if that timetable permits, napping in the afternoon is a great way to pick up that hour you'd love to have had earlier.
Relax before bedtime
By this I mean do some relaxing things for the hour or half-hour before going to sleep. Turn off that thriller with the car chases, turn off the computer and do some simple things to relax. I even have two types of books I read - the exciting or "this makes me think" books, and those with a fun, fluffy storyline which you don't really have to think about. These ones allow me to turn off the brain and let it go into shut-down mode preparatory for sleeping. Meditation is a good thing just before sleeping, too. Essentially what you're doing here is getting the brain to relax and go into relaxation mode. You also want to give your body time away from technology to relax too.
Have a ritual
If you have specific things that you always do before you go to bed, that's a great signal for your mind and body to know "we're doing these things, we're going to sleep soon". Your ritual is just your personal routine so your body and mind know what's going on.
Use your bedroom for bedroom activities
You know what I mean. :-) Try not to watch TV in bed (there's been a study that shows that couples who don't watch TV in bed have better sex more often than those who do). If you're limiting your TV just before you go to sleep you definitely don't want it in the room with you.
Studying, learning, doing handicrafts or having your office in the bedroom are all things to try and avoid. It's similar to the ritual thing - when you go into your bedroom, your mind and body should recognise this is a place for sleeping and relaxing, not for working.
Feng shui principles would suggest that you have restful colours and such as well - fairly obvious there, really. If you have garish and clashing things in front of you, your brain will not want to sleep.

The Main Health Benefit of Sleep: Longevity

Everyone should know that the three pillars to good health are diet, exercise and sleep. Of these, though, sleep is most often overlooked and neglected as a key element of a healthy life. People are becoming increasingly aware that they need to eat healthily and exercise regularly, but not enough people realise the value of sleep as part of this mix.
There are numerous health benefits of good sleep, ranging from reduced stress and weight control to improved memory and concentration during the day. However, the greatest benefit and the one that most people are probably interested in is that healthy sleep habits can increase your life span.
There are two factors at work when it comes to the effects of sleep on your life expectancy. The first factor is sleep duration, and the second is sleep quality. Sleep duration refers to the length of time that you tend to sleep for most nights, whilst sleep quality includes elements such as disruption to your sleep and how deeply you sleep.
There have been several major scientific studies in this area. The most significant was a very long term study contacted on several thousand pairs of twins. Twins are ideal for a lot of scientific research as they offer a way to control for other factors to some extent, allowing researchers to focus on the one they're interested in.
In this case, the interesting factor was the relationship between sleep and longevity. The twins in the study were asked questions about their average sleep duration and sleep quality, and this was then compared to their longevity over the long term. Self-reporting studies like this aren't as reliable as research that relies on objective measurement, but this can be compensated for by using a large number of participants, as this study did.
Once the results of the study were compiled and analysed, they found a strong link between sleep and longevity. However, this link was not as simple as many people might expect it to be. The research showed that whilst sleep quality correlates quite directly with the length of your life, the relationship with sleep duration isn't so simple.
According to the study, it appears that that there is a golden zone for the ideal amount of sleep that will increase your life expectancy. As you might expect, getting too little sleeping has a negative impact on life expectancy. But getting too much sleep can also have a bad effect. So the advice from the research is to get between seven and nine hours of sleep a night to increase your life expectancy.

Why Are Road Accidents Linked To Snoring?

Of all the road accidents that take place, 16% of them are due to driver fatigue and drowsiness while driving. There is growing awareness about the hidden link of snoring and sleep deprivation that leads to daytime drowsiness leading to accidents and mishaps at work and at home.
British Medical Association's representative, Dr. Peter Holden says that there are many factors that contribute to a driver's inability to focus and concentrate on the road and constant drowsiness. He explained that the lulling sensation due to noise levels and constant movement enhances the drowsiness into sleep. Though the reasons of sleeping at the wheel differ, all of the accidents have been fatal or near fatal due to loss of control of the driver. It is imperative never to take sedatives, anti-motion sickness pills or specific flu medication as they have a certain level of relaxants and sleep medication.
People who snore are constantly drowsy due to frequent waking-ups all through the night and lower intake of oxygen as they never reach the deep sleep REM phase. The fatigue builds up over time and that leads to daytime drowsiness which is further enhanced by lulling action of the vehicle and the regular rhythm of the engine noise, leading to instances of sleep at the wheel.
Sleep laboratory's Director at Loughborough University, Dr. Jim Horne was of the view that young drivers have sleep-related accidents in the mornings while the older drivers tend to sleep at the wheel in the afternoon due to the biological clock. In addition he mentioned that the specific category of people more prone to falling sleep or having intense spells of drowsiness are those who suffer from sleep apnea. And this is more prevalent that it was ever thought before. More than 8% of the population in the world is affected by it and most of the people suffering with sleep apnea are in the age group of 25 to 40 years. It happens due to an obstruction in the respiratory track usually due the pharynx which is located at the back of the throat.
It falls in and blocks the throat which leads to abrupt closure of breathing and then flops open. This in turn leads to low levels of concentration in the blood and then suddenly the brain wakes you up to start breathing again. Usually sleep apnea starts with snoring on a regular basis, and when it goes unregulated or you just ignore it, it may develop into sleep apnea. Some of the symptoms of sleep apnea include waking up with a sore throat, restlessness, and headaches in the morning, insomnia, waking up out of breath, moodiness, irritability, fitful sleep and waking up often all through the night. The specific symptoms of sleep apnea include long pauses in breathing while snoring, chronic snoring that is loud, daytime drowsiness and gasping during the night while asleep.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is better to see a doctor or a sleep specialist to ensure that a proper anti-snoring remedy is found. Not just to avoid accidents, you need to find the best snoring remedy for better health.

Diagnosis And Symptoms Of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)

One of the major side effects of regular nocturnal snoring results in many people is sleep apnea. It is defined as the cessation of regular airflow while asleep due to an obstruction in the respiratory track. These pauses in normal breathing become a clinical issue when the pauses become frequent and longer than 10 seconds. Usually, it is considered a health hazard if the pauses are more than 10 times within an hour.
The real reason why obstructive sleep apnea happens only during sleep and no pauses when you are awake is due to lack of muscle tone when the body completely relaxes during sleep. When you are awake, the muscles are tight and toned, thus, there is no snoring or pauses in breathing but the muscles relax and lose the ability to keep the tongue from falling back in or the pharynx to block the breathing passages.
Major symptoms of sleep apnea
The reason that you wake up with a snort, gasping for breath is the automatic response to the brain's command to start breathing again. If you have frequent episodes of gasping for breath and waking up to breathe, you need to get yourself evaluated for it. The frequent waking up sessions is another reason that you might be feeling drowsy all day long. And you might just not feel drowsy but the constant sleep deprivations builds over time leading to restlessness, irritability and heightened mood swings that not just affect your own personal feelings but affects the whole family and your partner. That is why it is your bed partner who notices the frequent changes in breathing or the family members that are disturbed by the snoring.
Some of the first symptoms that are noticeable about Obstructive Sleep apnea includes heavy and loud snoring with pauses, short temper, headaches in the morning, mood swings, anxiety, irritability, daytime drowsiness, low libido, sleep deprivation resulting in fatigue. But you need to remember that just because you snore is not a viable reason to develop sleep apnea. However, you may have a few of these symptoms but those with sleep apnea will have most of these symptoms all the time.
Sleep Apnea Diagnosis
The spectrum of sleep apnea is high. There are ways to diagnose it and the most common is the AHI index or the apnea/hypoanpea index. Pauses of breathing less than 10 per hour are not usually associated with a medical issue but to start with you have to undergo tests at a sleep laboratory. You'll need to spend a night where different equipment will monitor the quality of sleep and the number of times you wake up. Based on the results, a specific treatment plan will be formulated. But before the treatment plan is made, you'll be required to undergo the polysomnography test which includes ECG, EEG, EMG and mouth and nasal airflow examination. But it is only done in serious cases otherwise nursing observation and pulse oximetry is done to diagnose.

How CPAP/BIPAP Ventilators Work

Sleep apnea is a medical condition where your breathing repeatedly stops and starts throughout the night, preventing you from sleeping properly. There are two main types of this condition - obstructive and central.
• In the obstructive form of the condition, your breathing stops because the soft tissues of the throat relax, blocking the air passages and preventing air from flowing into the lungs.
• In the central form, the part of the brain that usually signals the muscles responsible for breathing fails to send the required signals, thus stopping your breathing.
CPAP/BIPAP apnea machines are highly effective at treating both these forms of the condition.
With both types of sleep apnea, your sleep cycle gets disrupted. The lack of oxygen eventually causes your brain to bring you out of deep sleep and resume breathing. While it may not fully awaken you, it does affect the amount of sleep you get. The body requires a certain amount of uninterrupted deep sleep each night in order to function properly. With this condition, that deep sleep is constantly being interrupted, and this adversely affects your body.
The exact mechanism by which each type of this condition affects your breathing plays a role in determining the way each is treated.
CPAP
When it comes to the obstructive form of the condition, one of the key identifying symptoms is loud snoring accompanied by occasional chokes and gasps. This is because the muscles controlling the soft tissue surrounding the throat have relaxed, blocking the passage of air and also causing the snoring. CPAP, otherwise known as Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, describes the method of keeping the air pressure outside your airway higher than it is inside of it, thus helping to drive air past the obstruction in your throat.
CPAP equipment consists of a small unit containing a motor. The motor takes in the surrounding air and pushes it through a tube to a mask that you wear, generating the higher pressure necessary for the treatment to be effective. While it may sound like this machine will take up a lot of space, many of the newer models are even smaller than your regular kitchen toaster. You will need to set the machine to generate the appropriate amount of pressure, and this differs from individual to individual. Some of the more advanced models also allow for a timed pressure increase, so that you can fall asleep with a lower pressure that is more comfortable and the machine will slowly ramp up the pressure to the level that you require as you fall into a deeper sleep.
BIPAP
BIPAP treatments are targeted towards the central type of this condition. It functions in almost exactly the same way as a CPAP machine does, except that it does not keep up a stead pressure. Instead, the machine varies the pressure according to whether you are inhaling or exhaling, lowering the pressure when you are exhaling to make it easier and more natural to do so.
Effective Treatment
No matter whether you have the obstructive or central form of sleep apnea, CPAP/BIPAP sleep treatment machines can help to alleviate the symptoms, allowing you to get the rest that your body requires to function properly.

Reasons Behind Your Snoring

If you snore, not only is it embarrassing but is a warning of the health hazards that can affect your quality of life. Additionally, bed partners suffer from insomnia and restlessness due to your snoring problem. Over time the snoring leads to separate beds and becomes one of the reasons for the breakdown of relationships. In most cases, people ignore snoring and in many cases it develops into sleep apnea and numerous other ailments.
Thus, to start with you need to stop snoring and improve your health for better quality of life. With high repercussions, you need to find the right solution for your snoring. Irrespective of whether you snore mildly or are a heavy snorer, you need to ensure that you find the right remedy. Finding the cause of snoring is important as it helps you find the best anti-snoring solution.
With over 300 over the counter anti snoring remedies available easily, there are a multitude of options that are available which can help you. If you are able to understand why you snore, you will be able to select the best remedy for your snoring. Basically, when you sleep, the muscles of your body relax and the muscles in the throat, neck and face loosen up and make the tongue fall in to the throat. Additionally, there are numerous other reasons that lead to snoring but the base cause remains that the narrowing of airway and nasal passages leads to the intense vibration of the soft tissue in the throat area. The vibration of the soft tissue as the inhaled air passes over it leads to snoring. And the higher degree of loosen tissue that is there which vibrates, the heavier the snoring is.
But the real reason for your snore needs to be understood. Maybe you have swollen tonsils or suffer from asthma or you smoke. In case your surgeon advices, you can get a tonsillitis or adenoid operation done. If there is any restriction or obstruction in regular breathing, you will snore irrespective of whether you are slim or overweight.
Some good anti-snoring solutions to try
Most of the snoring leads to hypertension, sleep apnea, diabetes and strokes which are direct effects of sleep deprivation. Other reasons include nasal bone deformation, misaligned jaw, diet, crooked septum and smoking and lifestyle contribute to snoring. To begin addressing your snoring issues, you have to work on cutting down on dairy products as it has proven to increase the mucus content in the lungs. Quit smoking. Smoking leads to inflammation of the airways as the harsh chemicals dry up the delicate mucus membranes and cause severe inflammation in the soft tissues.
Once you understand how snoring is caused, finding a solution is easy. You can start with sleeping on memory foam pillow as a certain level of elevation helps to keep the nasal passages clear of mucus. From singing to cutting out smoking and alcohol from your daily life, you can help to increase clear breathing and stop snoring. Using anti-snoring remedies like nasal sprays and mouth guards can help you feel better.
